Elementary school students are not allowed to carry medications with them. Medications must be kept in the health room and administered by the school nurse or a provider designated by the principal. Medication includes approved prescription and non-prescription (over-the-counter) drugs.
The taking or administering of medication during school hours is discouraged. Ideally, all medication should be given at home. If a student is to receive medication for a period of time, arrangements should be made to have it administered either before or after school hours whenever possible
It is recognized, however, that students with chronic disabilities or illnesses may require medication if they are to remain in school. Students should have medication available and administered in a manner consistent with school health services procedures.
-A complete written and signed order from the prescribing physician, dentist, or nurse practitioner (NP, PNP, or FNP) must accompany all medication to be administered.
- If a student is to take over the counter (OTC) medication at school, a new, unopened box must be provided, with physician order form , to the health room. If it is a prescription medication the medication must be in original prescription bottle that lists students name and prescription information matching what was written on physicians order form.
Medication Forms:
- Medication Order Form (Physicians Order Form)
- Diabetes Management (Physician Order Form)
- Epi Pen order/Care Plan
